Teen Birthday Party Themes:

Hosting a theme party is a great way to get guests into the spirit of celebrating. Here are some teen birthday party ideas:

  • Hollywood Theme: Hosting a Hollywood-themed party is especially fun for teenage girls who love to dress up. When sending your invitations, tell guests to dress to impress. Roll out a red carpet they will see upon arrival. Set up a backdrop for photo ops. Decorate the “Oscar room” in red, black and gold. Serve sparkling cider in champagne flutes and show the latest Hollywood blockbuster.
  • Murder Mystery: Hosting a “Who did it?” Murder Mystery party is a lot of fun. You can create a character for every guest and ask them to dress appropriately. You can either write your own murder mystery or download one here.
  • Black Light Dance Party. Decorate the room in neon and set up plenty of black lights. Encourage everyone to wear neon and white so they will glow at the party. Hire a DJ or create a huge playlist with great dance songs. Serve brightly colored drinks with neon straws. Hand out day glow necklaces and bracelets too.
  • Spa Party. Who doesn’t love a chance to relax and enjoy some pampering? Have a party filled with manicures, pedicures, facials and make-up application. Often times cosmetic reps will participate in these parties because it gives them an opportunity to demonstrate their beauty products. Put on relaxing music and serve spa day mocktails like these cucumber mocktinis.
  • Casino Night. Fill the party room with game tables. Instead of playing with money, play with chips that can be “cashed” in at the end of the party for prizes. Games like poker, texas hold ’em, roulette, and black jack are fun options.
  • Fortune Teller Party. Tarot cards, crystal balls, horoscopes can be a fun and intriguing way to spend a birthday party. Collect all your party guests’ birthdays beforehand so you can print out horoscopes for each sign.
  • Luau: if your teen has a summer birthday, an outdoor luau makes a great party theme. Luau decorations are easy to find an often inexpensive. You can serve Hawaiian punch, grilled shrimp skewers and pineapple upside down cake. Give every guest a lei, play some Hawaiian music and make everyone limbo!

Teen Birthday Party Games

If you are not having a particular theme but want to entertain the masses:

  • Xbox 360, Kinect, or Wii. There are so many fun group games you can choose from: Rock Band, Dance Revolution and MarioKart, to name a few. You can create tournament style rounds of these games and play all night.
  • Lights, Camera, Action: Have a video camera or two and have the teens make their own videos. They could make a new music video for a favorite song, a commercial for some item or a short skit. Provide them with some starter ideas, some costumes and props. You can even take the teens to a thrift store or dollar store and give them each a few bucks to buy whatever they think they’ll need.
  • Twister: Twister is a classic party game that always ends in giggles.
  • Celebrity 20 Questions: The game is played similar to a regular game of 20 Questions, only the objects chosen are celebrities. One player picks a celebrity and doesn’t tell who it is. The other players try to guess who the celebrity is by asking ‘yes or no’ type questions. After 20 questions, if no one guesses correctly, the player who picked the celebrity wins and gets to go again after sharing who their pick was. If someone guesses correctly, they win and gets to pick the next celebrity.

Teen Birthday Party Menu:

Teenagers love to eat, and they’re especially fond of party food. If your party has a theme, incorporate the food into the theme. Here are some basic party food ideas:

  • Sub sandwiches
  • Pinwheels
  • Sliders
  • Skewers
  • Nachos
  • Pizza rolls
  • A sandwich bar
  • A sundae bar
  • Apples and Caramel Dip
  • Chocolate Covered Bananas
  • Chocolate Fondue
  • Pizza
  • Potato chips
  • Pretzels
  • Corn chips, salsa and guacamole
  • Popcorn
  • Canned soda
  • Bottled water

When it comes to teen birthday parties, shorter is better. Attention spans are short, and keeping a party going for too long can result in tired teens. Plan for a three hour get-together. This much time should be plenty for everyone to enjoy the delicious food, cake and activities.
